Chalet L'Otavalo...
When you stay at rustic Chalet L'Otavalo, you'll enjoy all the rural delights of life on a farm, but it's just 1km to the charming village of Manigod, where you'll find a restaurant which does takeaway food, a local speciality food store, a popular bakery and a great cafe.
The accommodation is all on one floor of this delightful renovated farmhouse, while the owners' brother lives in a basement apartment with its own access. The owners themselves live in a modern chalet opposite Chalet L'Otavalo, and there's another rental property on the farm, it's a family affair.
There are cows grazing in the field opposite most of the year. There are also chickens and donkeys on the farm. Children will love the table football and swings and there is plenty of room for them to run around outside.
There are sheltered terraces on either side of the property, where you can barbecue and eat al fresco, or maybe enjoy a soak in the hot tub. There's also a lovely long vine and rose-covered balcony at the front of the chalet, with superb views over the Aravis mountains.
About the property...
There's room for eight guests at Chalet L'Otavalo, which has been recently refurbished, and it's all on one floor.
There are three double bedrooms, one of which has a small en suite shower room, and a small bunk room for two children. There's also a separate bathroom, and two separate toilets.
The large kitchen and dining area is a very sociable place to cook and eat together, there's also a dining table in the living room, which runs the length of the chalet - here you can enjoy a cosy evening on the sofas around the woodburner while you watch a film or plan your next exciting day in the mountains.
There are two sheltered terraces, one on either side of the property, where you can barbecue and eat al fresco, or maybe admire the stunning views while you enjoy a soak in the hot tub. There's also a lovely long rose and vine-covered balcony at the front of the chalet, with superb views over the Aravis mountains.
We think Chalet L'Otavalo will be the perfect choice for families, or a group who enjoy taking life at a slower pace, while still having the facilities of the village within easy reach.
About the area...
Chalet L'Otavalo is just 10 minutes from the Croix Fry sector of the La Clusaz pistes (altitude 1500m), where you can park free. The ski bus stops just 600m from the chalet.
There are plenty of gentle nursery slopes, where beginners can build confidence, while experienced skiers have access to more than 200km of pistes and 95 lifts in the La Clusaz/Le Grand Bornand area.
Cross-country skiers will find plenty of trails on the nearby Beauregard plateau, and non-skiers are not forgotten, with an ice skating rink and cinema in La Clusaz, as well as sledging, snow-shoe walking, dog-sledding and horse-drawn sleigh rides.
In the summer, you’ll find no shortage of things to do when you stay at Chalet L'Otavalo. There are plenty of walks, from mountain hikes to gentle plateau paths, and you can take the ski lift to the top of the mountains and come back down at your own pace.
Children will enjoy the delights of the farm on your doorstep, while there are tree-top adventure parks for all the family at Thônes and Le Grand Bornand, and a beautiful lakeside golf course at Annecy.
Adrenalin junkies can try paragliding, canyoning, climbing, via ferrata, mountain-biking or white-water rafting - just some of the activities on offer within a few miles of Manigod.

The OVO Network Review
If you are looking for an authentic farmhouse experience, and enjoy watching the world go by at a simple, more relaxed place, then Chalet L'Otavalo could be the place for you. Chalet L'Otavalo is a homely rustic chalet which is ideal for families with children.
The views across to La Tournette are breathtaking, and we really like the fact that the owners are happy to share their family farming lifestyle with their guests. The cows will be crossing the road twice a day!
The accommodation is on one floor of a renovated farmhouse, on a farm belonging to a family who have been in the village of Manigod for generations. So, no stairs to deal with, and the owners have retained the original low ceilings and small windows typical of farmhouses of this age.
There's plenty of room for children to let off steam in the fresh mountain air, and garden toys for children to use against a stunning Alpine backdrop.
Although the property seems delightfully rural, it's only 1km to the village of Manigod, and 7km to the ski station of La Croix Fry. In the summer, there are lovely walks around the valley from the door, and plenty of bike trails for cyclists.
Only one of the bedrooms has an en suite bedroom, there's also a separate shower room and two separate toilets.
There is a self - contained apartment in the basement of the farm occupied by the owner's brother, which has its own separate access.

Welcome to our home!
This chalet is typical of the mountain farms you will find in the Manigod area. We think it dates from the end of the 18th century.
It has been home to generations of farmers: the people and the animals lived under the same roof. The old farms were designed to do everything in the same place: looking after the animals; making Reblochon cheese; the storage of fodder and family life.
We've lived at this farm since the year 2000, before building our own chalet next door. We have renovated it room by room, and tried to keep the authenticity by revealing the old walls and decorating them with the old tools that we found in the barn: the harrow, the flail, the fork and the horse collar.
The old stable has been transformed into the new living room, the "front room" has been knocked into the kitchen, the animal area has become a bedroom. We've tried to keep as much of the original material as possible, to preserve the old character, even removing each layer of wallpaper and paint one by one, rolling back the years through previous restorations.
That is how we got back to the rough wood which revealed the true character of the chalet.
We had a lovely surprise when we renovated one of the bedrooms - we uncovered a piece of wood bearing the date 1734! Is that the date of construction? We can't be 100% sure, but if that is the case, it is one of the oldest houses in Manigod. At that time, it was common to re-use wood from other buildings to construct or alter chalets, using one piece of wood to replace something that was in need of repair, so the date on a piece of wood doesn't always correspond to the age of the building.
However, the plank was found in a well preserved and sheltered area of the barn, so it could very well be original.
This is just one recent story from this old chalet - now it's up to you to discover it and fill it with your own memories!

“We highly recommend this address”
A very pleasant stay at Chalet l'Otavalo. The place is calm and peaceful, enlivened by birdsong and the bells of the neighbouring cows. The living areas are warm, well laid out and fully equipped. The rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable. We really appreciated the outside area for meals, and the swing area and jacuzzi were real pluses. We were able to take advantage of the proximity of hiking trails, Thônes and Annecy and enjoyed talking to the Manigodins. We highly recommend this address to lovers of nature and authenticity.
“We'll be back with pleasure”
The chalet was great, clean, large and very well equipped. Perfect, quiet location. Our host Laurence was very kind and welcoming. We'll be back with pleasure.
