Everything You Should Know About Paragliding in Annecy

While there are many locations where you can try paragliding in the French Alps, Annecy is definitely one to tick off the list! Not only will you experience stunning views, but it is also home to the cleanest lake in Europe. So, why not experience all this from a totally new perspective on a tandem paragliding tour?

We want to make sure that your holiday is everything you want it to be and more. In this post, we have outlined here the ‘5Ws’ of what you should know before taking to the skies. Our recommended operator is Activ Annecy, and the information in this post is based on their offering.

Tempted to try the sport for yourself? Read on to find out some key info to know beforehand…

Who can go paragliding in Annecy?

Paragliding is open to all ages, as long as you’re looking for a bit of adrenaline! Whatever your level, there should always be an option for you to give it a go. However, there are some restrictions to keep in mind.

While many operators now provide services for children, adults, and people with reduced mobility, there are some height and weight restrictions. Typically, anyone within the range of 20 to 130 kilos will be allowed.

In addition to the weight allowance, everyone should be able to take a few strides during takeoff and landing (depending on the location). However, there are other options for those with restricted mobility, so be sure to contact your paragliding operator for more details.

(NB Paragliding is not permitted throughout pregnancy).

Your pilot will capture photos and videos of you in the air that you can purchase after your flight!

Paragliding for your level

There are different approaches to paragliding – however, not all are suitable for all levels.

If you’re not an experienced glider, you will need to book a tandem flight. This type of paragliding is very popular amongst tourists, as you don’t need any prior experience to try it.

Tandem paragliding in Annecy – What to expect

During the flight, you will be safely strapped into a harness along with a pilot, who is responsible for flying and navigating the paraglider.

Although considered an adrenaline sport, the sensation is more similar to floating (unless you opt for an acrobatic flight – more on that later!)

Tandem paragliding is typically open to anyone over the age of four. Younger fliers, however, will need written parental consent before flying, as well as a guardian with them on the day.

If you have restricted mobility, you will find an increasing number of instructors who are trained to accompany you during this experience. Tandem flights are an inclusive and accessible sport, available for all who wish to discover Lake Annecy and its mountains in a tranquil and unique way!

When can you go?

Although you can paraglide all year round, you will find most operators will operate from March to November. This is due to temperatures, as the altitude makes the air a lot cooler – and many passengers prefer the warmer summer months to enjoy their flight to the fullest. During winter, flights are particularly calm, and in summer, the upwind offers especially high and long flights.

Keep in mind that some weather conditions may cause cancellations in your reservation, so while it’s important to book in advance, you might want to stay flexible with dates in case of bad weather (strong winds, rain, thunderstorms, etc.)

Where do you take off and land?

The meeting point for operators around Lake Annecy is in Doussard. From there, you will be taken up to the Col de la Forclaz by minibus, at which point you will be fitted with safety equipment for your flight before takeoff.

There are different flight lengths available, ranging anywhere between 10 to 45 minutes depending on the price (more on that below). The flight will take you back across the lake towards Doussard for landing.

What do you need to bring?

For safety and comfort, most operators suggest that you wear sunglasses throughout the flight and require you to wear closed practical shoes. They also ask that you don’t wear anything that can easily slip off when you’re in the air.

In addition, we would recommend wearing sunscreen, and a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt. Even if it’s a hot day at ground level, temperatures get a lot colder once you’re in the air – you’ll thank us later!

How long are you in the air?

The length of your flight will depend on the package you choose when booking. These can range between 10 to 45 minutes, with prices differing depending on the length of your flight. Typically you will find prices varying between 90 to 140€, though these will differ between operators.
