A long weekend in Les Portes du Soleil

Join me as I discover Les Portes du Soleil on this final weekend of April in Morzine. I am staying at the charming Chalet de Nantaux, nestled at the foot of the famous peak that gives the property its name. Although I am familiar with Morzine as a summer mountain biking destination, this 3-day long weekend was a unique experience, ideal for road cycling. The off-peak springtime season is a great time for road cycling, with less traffic, mild temperatures and the opening of the first medium-altitude passes.

Morzine, an ideal destination for cycling holidays

Here are two routes departing from Chalet de Nantaux.

1. The Col de l’Encrenaz loop

Distance : 35 km
Duration : around 2h30
Ascent : 300 m
Link to itinerary

The first is a 35km loop with an 800m ascent, taking us towards the Col de l’Encrenaz, which is a less well-known pass than its neighbours in Les Gets. The ascent from La Côte d’Arbroz supplies picturesque twists and turns with breathtaking views over Morzine. After reaching the pass, the gentle descent towards the Les Gets bridge includes wild landscapes, dominated by the Roc d’Enfer (Hell’s Rock). As you head back down towards Morzine, I recommend a stop off at the Solide café, renowned for its quality coffee and homemade meals. The return journey is via Montriond.

2. Return route to the Lac des Mines d’Or

Distance : 25 km
Duration : around 1h30
Ascent : 500 m
Link to itinerary

The second route departing from the chalet will take you to the source of the Dranse River, at the Lac des Mines d’Or. This accessible return journey rewards you with spectacular views. Heading towards Montriond, you will cross Les Balcons to join a small road leading to the lake for around ten kilometres. The ascent is gentle; only the final kilometre is more taxing. The descent back down to the chalet is pleasant and takes lesser-known roads.

The cosy living room and the open kitchen are perfect for enjoying some family time, while the children can keep themselves entertained in the games room, equipped with a wide range of games and a home cinema. The warm and refined decor, with its mountain colours, adds a touch of authenticity to this unique place.

Discover Chalet de Nantaux, an ideal holiday accommodation option for cycling enthusiasts. Located a stone’s throw from Morzine’s cycle paths, this chalet was awarded OVO Network’s “Cycling friendly” label, meaning it has all the equipment you need for cycling holidays, such as secure bike racks and a full repair kit.
