Gear
Ski rental shops are extremely common in all popular ski resorts, so if you don’t have your own equipment, there’s no need to worry! Even items like jackets and salopettes can be hired if you’re a first time skier, through companies such as Ski-Chic. If you’re travelling at a peak time like Christmas/New Year, Half term, or Easter, then you will need to book ski gear ahead to avoid disappointment.
The essentials for skiers:
- Skis
- Boots (if you’re hiring boots, make sure to take ski socks to your local shop when trying them on)
- Ski poles (sometimes beginners will learn without poles)
The essentials for boarders:
- Snowboard
- Snowboard boots
Clothing and accessories
The key to what to take on a skiing holiday is layers! First time skiers and boarders often make the mistake of wearing too few layers, that are too thick. Good quality, lightweight and breathable layers are the key to staying warm on the slopes. It’s always a good idea to ski with a backpack, so you can ditch the extra layers if you are too warm!
We recommend packing:
- Ski jacket
- Salopettes
- Thermal tops and leggings
- Ski socks
- A neck warmer
- Ski goggles/ sunglasses for Après ski!
- A good quality fleece
- Swimwear if you are planning on visiting a pool, or staying in a property with spa facilities

Safety equipment
Skiing holidays offer guaranteed fun for the whole family, however safety on the mountain is paramount. The amount/ type of equipment you will require is based on the type of skiing you want to do.
Those wanting to explore the off piste terrain for the first time, should always be accompanied by a professional guide. Guides can be booked through your local ski school.
We recommend packing the following safety equipment:
- Helmet- this is an absolute essential, don’t hit the slopes without it!
- Avalanche kit for off piste skiing
- Walkie talkies
- Back protector
- High factor sun cream
- Water
That’s it for the essentials! Make sure to pack warm clothes for your time away from the slopes, as well as all your cosmetic essentials. When you stay at an OVO Network property, you don’t have to worry about taking towels, or where to wash your clothes- our partner properties have that covered! Check our minimum equipment list to see what all of our partner properties include.
